This is a list of countries and dependencies ranked by human population density, and measured by the number of human inhabitants per square kilometre. The list includes sovereign states and self-governing dependent territories based upon the ISO standard ISO 3166-1. The list also includes but does not rank unrecognized but de facto independent countries. The figures in the following table are based on areas including inland water bodies (lakes, reservoirs, rivers). Data are estimates for July 2005, taken from the United Nations World Prospects Report (2004 revision), unless noted otherwise.

Note that figures are simply estimates of population divided by total surface area and are not considered in this article as reflecting density in the urban sense or as indicative of the ability of a territory’s land to support human habitation. Names of dependent territories as well as recognized states with no or limited control over their territory are shown in italics.

Source: Unless otherwise specified (or unless entered in error without specifying the data source) figures for Population and Population Density figures are sourced from year 2005 data in United Nations World Population Prospects (2004 revision). Area figures given here are taken from various (usually unspecified) sources.

  • The European Union is a sui generis supranational union possessing "country-like" characteristics. The entity is composed of 27 member states. Its population density has been estimated at 114, and it would be ranked 93rd if it were included in the list (population: 494,070,000, area: 4,422,773). See also: List of regional organizations by population.
  • Macau, a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, has a higher population density than any entity on this list, with 520,000 people sharing an area of 29.2 km—a population density of over 17,000 persons per km.
  • The most densely populated sovereign nation is Monaco, with a population density of 16,754 people/km.
  • Antarctica is a continent of 14,400,000 km in area with territorial claims from multiple countries that are not included elsewhere in the above table. With a population of roughly 1000, this results in a population density of ~0.00007 people per km (far below Greenland's density of 0.026). A peak summer population of ~5000 results in a density of ~0.00035.

Making it really hard to immigrate to the US is just mean! =( Don't you think?
Q. CAUTION: Before answering, please think for at least 90 seconds. I don't want sound bites and I don't want sourceless claims (ie, "More immigrants means more poor people which means more taxpayer dollars going toward welfare. Our economy can't take that!" -- how MANY more taxpayer dollars? In numbers, how BIG of an impact would that have on our economy?). According to Canada's statistics database, it takes approx. 180 days to immigrate to Canada. According to England's counterpart database, it takes on average 6 months to immigrate there. According to New Zealand's Immigration Services webpage, immigration to NZ takes 6-9 months. The US doesn't publish straightforward immigration statistics. But according to the website, the waiting… [cont.]

A. We cant let everybody in. - In case you missed it we have over 6% unemployment with many places much higher. Where are these people going to work? - Our lax standards made it easy for terrorists and criminals to to immigrate legally. We don't need any more of that 9/11 stuff or train bombings like England and Spain. - Have to learn English? Thats a shame that we should require you to learn our language instead of everybody here learning yours. - Yeah it costs money. It costs money to make sure you can be productive when you get here and aren't a criminal.
